The Woman in the Rocking Chair

Last night I experienced a new dream image. I was in a group of well-dressed women and found myself sitting on the lap of an older, dowager-type woman. She was very kind; I sensed that. She was asking me questions and when I would elaborate, she would interrupt me. “Don’t explain your answer,” she said. “Just stop there.”

“I know what you mean,” I said. “I understand people by their vibrations, not by what they say.” And she nodded.

She rocked me and talked to me for what seemed like a long time. I was holding a large, rather oily cake I had made with dates and such and she was interested. I broke off a piece, very awkwardly, and handed it to her to try.

What does this new image say to me? It says that this is the way in which people are really understood. Not by what they say or pretend to be, but by who they are. The ego is incapable of understanding that, to be sure. It is filled with palaver and foolishness. But with this dream teacher, being gently rocked was quite enough.

Dreams are shocking in their simplicity and we know that they are only figures to gaze upon. Their unreality is a fact. Why do we not understand that life is just like a dream?
