May the long time sun shine upon you….

Someone asked me if the loss of a child ever got any easier. My quick reply is that time is cut from eternity, so the answer to that is yes and no and yes and no. It is striking me as I get older that we are being rocked to sleep and rocked awake at the same time. Contradiction and paradox are the only sure containers for wisdom. And we are here to learn how to love.

The Book of Mirdad says, “We live that we may learn to love. We love that we may learn to live. No other lesson is required of man.”

We all need comfort and intimacy and we all need challenge and wisdom that is seldom intimate. That is because wisdom is bigger than our wants. It comes to us in the dark night of the soul and also encourages us to shine like the sun. The head is being tutored by the heart and never the twain shall meet. One of them has to go. Guess which one?

When Jesus hung between the opposites, He knew His Father in Heaven wanted eternal life for him and all that follow Him. His sorrow and momentary lack of faith was clear. “Let this cup pass from me,” He said. But He knew His life was bigger than his own human wishes. And so it goes for all of us.

Easter is the resurrection of the Self we have always been. The soul is pushing up through the soil of grace and fortitude.

“May the long time sun
Shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on.”
